Sticking to a Gluten Free Diet
Gluten contain ingredients like wheat, barley and rye are so common in the food we eat that maintaining a gluten free diet can seem almost impossible. This, however, is not the case. While it may take some getting used to, many people with Celiac disease are finding that they can still eat at their favorite restaurants and at the homes of friends. As gluten sensitivity has become more common, the number of options for alternative sources of carbohydrates has grown, as have the number of cookbooks and websites devoted to sharing recipes that are both delicious and healthy. For example, you can find several easy gluten free bread recipes online if you are into cooking your own food.
If you are new to a gluten free diet but would like to keep eating your favorite foods, substitutions can be easy to make. For those who love Italian, try switching out your regular pasta for shredded zucchini or eggplant. In addition to maintaining the same size and texture, you will be eating a lower calorie, more nutritious meal. Instead of eating a sandwich, try making a lettuce wrap that contains your favorite sandwich ingredients. They take no more time to make, and are just as easy to take with you in a lunch bag for work.
Some people who are on a gluten free diet find that they have a more difficult time feeling full. Bread tends to be incredibly filling and a staple of our diet. If you stop eating bread, but find nothing to replace it, you may find that you are hungry all the time. The next time you visit your grocery store, look through the aisles for packages that are designated as gluten free. You will be amazed at the wide variety of gluten free foods now available at most stores, including energy bars, crackers and other portable snack foods. Get in the habit of carrying these with you for healthy snacks throughout the day.
