Berry Juice Recipe and its Health Benefits

This berry juice recipe is loaded with antioxidants like anthocyanins and vitamin C. It is great for helping to prevent health problems like cancer, heart disease and even gout.

Berry Juice Recipe
1 apple
1 cup of blueberries
1 cup of cherries

When it comes to juicing apples I prefer to juice them with the skins on for my juice recipes. The skins contain the vast majority of healthy phytochemicals like flavonoids and is also a great source of fiber. In fact I juice the entire apple, because the core also contains many nutrients.

The blueberries only need to be rinsed, but the cherries involve a little prep time as they will need to be pitted first. The pits will destroy your juicing blade if you try and juice them.

Apple Health Benefits
Apples are a great source of antioxidant flavonoids like quercetin and catechins. One large prospective study found that those who ate the most flavonoid containing foods like apples, onions and tea were significantly less likely to develop coronory heart disease than those who consumed very little flavonoid containing foods. In this same study, those who consumed the highest amounts of the flavonoid quercetin (mainly from apples) were a lot less likely to develop lung cancer. In general, studies show that the regular eating of apples lowers our risk of developing any kind of cancer.

Health Benefits of Blueberries
The deep purple color of blueberries is provided by a plant pigment called anthocyanin.  Anthocyanins are also potent antioxidants that are found in red/purple grapes and are a key ingredient in the heart healthy benefits of red wine. Anthocyanins help to improve the structural integrity of blood vessels such as arteries, veins and capillaries. This helps us to avoid developing atherosclerosis, a condition that hardens and narrows our arteries and raises blood pressure. Atherosclerosis is the number one risk factor for heart disease in the U.S.A.

Health Benefits of Cherries
Cherries have been used as a gout remedy for decades. The first person to discover that cherries help with gout symptoms was a Texan doctor back in the 1950′s. Alone at his home one night, the doctor was confined to his wheel chair because his gout symptoms were so painful. He had nothing to eat, save for a bowl of cherries. The next morning he was amazed that the pain had significantly decreased. He decided to eat 6 cherries everyday to see what would happen. He was amazed to find that the pain was completely eliminated after a few weeks. Cherries have this effect because they contain chemicals that can help metabolize uric acid out of the body. If uric acids levels build up in the body they eventually crystallize in the joints creating the pain and swelling that is gout. So gout relief is one of the main benefits of juicing cherries.
